Rama Navami

Rama Navami (Sanskrit: राम नवमी) is a Hindu festival commemorating the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of the Vishnu, to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya, Kosala. This event comes on the ninth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar cycle of Chaitra (March-April), the first month in the Hindu calendar, and is part of the Chaitra Navaratri in the spring. The first celebration of the Hindu new year is Ramanavami.

The day is commemorated by reciting the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Rama. Hindus observe the holiday by paying visits to temples, praying, fasting, listening to spiritual speeches, and singing bhajans or kirtans. (devotional songs). Some devotees offer worship to Rama like an infant by placing an image of him in a cradle. There are also charitable events and community lunches planned. For many Hindus, the holiday represents an opportunity for moral introspection.

Ramanavami is also celebrated in Bilagi at several temples such as Rayar Mutt and Givina Dinnesh Temple. On that day early morning, they all gather at the temple, and decorate the temple, and cradle. They do pooja and the elder woman of the group will put an image or photo of Rama in the decorated cradle to mark the birth of Sri Rama. And they do naividya of Kosambari and Paanak. They distribute the Kosambari and Paanaka to all the devotees. They sing bhajans of Sri Ramachandra and devotional songs.
